Many writers imitated Saikaku in the 18th century, but none equaled his achievements. They explain how the world was created, how certain animals possess certain characteristics, why some places have waterfalls, volcanoes, mountains, flora or fauna and, in the case of legends, an explanation of the origins of things.

At some indeterminate date between the 2nd and 5th centuries, two long Tamil verse romances sometimes called epics were written: Cilappatikaram The Jeweled Anklet by Ilanko Atikal, which has been translated into English and ; and its sequel Manimekalai The Girdle of Gemsa Buddhist work by Cattanar.
